About the Artwork
Fern Mallis, longtime Executive Director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, once observed, “For many young girls, [Barbie is] their first association with fashion and dressing up and changing clothes.” That’s undoubtedly true...and we’d also bet many young male designers discovered their love of fashion with Barbie, too.
This image, created for the Magic Moves Photoshoot Barbie™ playset in the mid-80’s, gives you Barbie as an unabashed fashionista. And given that Barbie can pull off virtually any look, it’s no surprise that some of the biggest names in fashion--Givenchy, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Escada, Oscar de la Renta, Versace, Dior--have created couture looks for her.
But Barbie never takes the attention for granted. The Photoshoot playset included mini headshots for Barbie to give out. Even when it seems like everyone in the world wants to dress you, Barbie believes that you still gotta hustle.
