About the Artwork
Though Barbie’s original hometown is Willows, Wisconsin, the hamlet she’s most associated with is sunny, laid-back Malibu, California. Malibu Barbie was introduced to the world by Mattel in 1971. Like today, it was a tumultuous time in America, with economic instability, anti-war sentiment and civil rights movements filling both the streets and the airwaves. People were on edge...so the idea of a day at the beach with Barbie and friends was perfect for a country hungry for escape.
But it wasn’t just America that was changing. Barbie was changing, too. Malibu Barbie featured an open smile for the first time, as well as suntanned and makeup-free skin. Most notably, Barbie’s shy, sideways glance was jettisoned in favor of bright, blue forward-looking eyes. Malibu Barbie seemed to be saying, “The future may be scary but I’m facing it head on...and then going for a dip in the Pacific. Wanna come?”
